No Australian experience is complete without a day of hanging out with wildlife only found Down Under. Kangaroos and Koalas are two of the most stereotypical cute, cuddly creates that inhabit Australia, so there was no way I could miss out on an opportunity to see them. This past weekend, CAPA took everyone to the Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park, which is about an hour and a half north of Sydney. When I first entered the part, I was greeted by an enclosure that housed about 6 fully grown Koalas. Most of them were sleeping (since Koalas typically sleep around 16-18 hours a day), but later one of the park rangers brought one out for everyone to pet and take pictures of or with. Their was also a large open but shaded area with benches and picnic tables in which a surplus amount of Kangaroos, wallabies, and emu roamed freely. These animals were used to the human interaction they let you take pictures of and pet them. I mean, how many people can say they got a ‘selfie’ with a kangaroo? They were so comfortable with humans that Haley even had an encounter at lunch with an emu that stole and ate her hotdog bun. But being the animal lover that I am, I absolutely loved petting and hand-feeding the Kangaroos and wallabies.  We also took a walking tour around a trail, and the Park ranger stopped to inform us about the various plants that the aborigines people have used for hundreds of thousands of years on a daily basis. They also informed us about a number of ceremonies and rituals taken place for a variety of people. Their culture and the ways in which it’s integrated into their society in fascinating, especially with regards to their presence compared with that of the British influence that created Australia. Lastly, we learned how to throw a boomerang and even had a little competition after a few practice rounds. Even though I would consider myself to be someone with pretty good athletic ability, I learned that day that boomerangs are not a natural talent for me. I pathetically tossed it at the wrong angle and lets just say it never made it way back to me. The day was pretty hot, but we stayed hydrated and I enjoyed every minute of it.
