The Seoul Diaries: 2박 3일 in 강릉

안녕하세요! Welcome back to my blog~

Today, I will be giving you the breakdown of my 3 days and 2 nights trip in Gangneung (강릉), which is located on the east coast of Korea.

Food!!!

Here are the Gangneung STAPLE foods that you must try if you ever go! You won’t regret it!

  • 물회 – it is basically a bowl full of raw sushi, water, and other vegetables. The restaurant Haemiga (해미가) serves a very filling meal of mulhwi, 미역국 (seaweed, soup), 수육, 전 (korean pancake), rice, and 소면 (plain noodles).
  • 수육 – boiled pork; it can be served on its own or with another meal.
  • 가오리찜 – just embrace this new dish and try it! Waiting outside in a line for 20 minutes at the famous Goseong Braised Fish Restaurant (고성생선찜) was well worth the wait. Once you order and receive the food, the meat slides right off of the bones and is so juicy!! This was my favorite 강릉 cuisine and I really want to go back just for this meal again soon.
  • 호두과자 – This is a must-eat snack. You can find these being sold on the street or at gas station rest stop areas called 휴게소. It is essentially a walnut-shaped treat filled with red bean paste or custard. They taste best when warm and make a good traveling snack!

The More You Know: Korea’s rest stop areas are superior to those in the United States. They are super clean, systematically organized, and have almost no lines!!

  • 꼬막무침비빔밥 – Since Gangneung is located near the ocean, it is only right that this list include this seafood meal. In English, it translates to being “cockle bibimbap”, which is a cousin of clams. Mixed with green peppers, rice, and green onions, this dish was so filling and tasty. I even tried eating a mini crab for the first time. My overall thoughts: a little crunchy but not bad. The restaurant was called Gangneung Eomji’s Cockle Jip No.1 Branch (강릉엄지네꼬막집 1호점) by the way.
  • 순두부 젤라또 – This can only be found in Gangneung and it is their famous soft tofu flavored gelato. At Soft Tofu Gelato No.2 Branch (순두부젤라또 2호점), you can order this flavor along with other cool flavors and find comfortable seating in their four-floored building. There is no way to describe the taste of this gelato except delicious.
  • 강릉 커피콩빵 – I didn’t actually have the chance to taste this for myself, but it is famous coffee-flavored bread that all tourists have to try.

Visited Places

During this adventure, I visited a few places along the east coast that I would recommend you going to.

  • Art Museum (아르떼뮤지엄 강릉) – The exhibit was super cool! It had various rooms with different themes like lightning, beach, flowers, star, and waterfall.
  • Beaches – Anmok Haebyeon, Gyeongpo Provincial Park, and Gangmun Haebyeon (see various photos below)
  • Cafes – There are cafes all along the shoreline of Gangneung and they were pretty great! Not only do you get to eat yummy baked goods and treats, but you also get to enjoy the calming beachfront view. I’d recommend going to Cafe Long Black (롱블랙), Shelly’s Cafe (쉘리스), 곳 and Cafe Bada (카페 바다) [even though I didn’t get to go to the last two, the views look amazing from pictures].

Love you 강릉, I’ll be back soon~~
